ABOUT DSN BACKYARD

A Virtual Backyard Ultra is a virtual endurance running challenge where participants run a set distance every hour for as long as they can, wherever they choose to run.

The traditional Backyard Ultra format requires runners to complete 4.167 miles (6.706 km) every hour, on the hour. Each new lap begins when the next hour starts, giving runners the remaining time to rest, refuel, and recover. The challenge continues until only one runner completes the final lap.

In a Virtual Backyard Ultra, participants can take part from their own location, track their laps using a GPS watch or running app, and submit their results online. It’s a test of endurance, consistency, mental toughness, and determination.

The goal is simple: Keep showing up, keep completing your laps, and see how far you can go!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Sign up for DSN Virtual Event. The organizer will provide the event date, rules, and instructions for submitting your results.

Prepare your route. Choose a safe, repeatable route where you can complete each lap and return to your starting point.

Run 4.167 miles every hour. This is the standard Backyard Ultra distance, also known as 6.706 km.

Start each lap on the hour. If you finish in 45 minutes, you have 15 minutes to rest, eat, drink, and prepare for the next lap.

Track your progress.Use a GPS watch or running app to record your distance and time, following the event's tracking and verification rules.

Keep going for as long as you can. Your total distance depends on how many hourly laps you complete. Some virtual events have a fixed duration, while others follow different rules for determining the winner.

LIVE TRACKING

To live-track a Virtual Backyard Ultra, you want other people to be able to see your location, distance, pace, and completed laps in real time while you run your hourly 4.167-mile (6.706 km) loop. We will be using Strava Beacon. This will be the best for sharing your live location with friends or family while running. You can share your location with safety contacts, depending on your subscription and device.

  • Start a recorded run.

  • Enable Beacon and share the tracking link.

  • Your contacts can follow your progress.
